Gopi Geet Shalokas

Pujya Pad Goswami Tulsidasji was born on the 7th day of Shravan Shukla (August) in 1554 A.D. He was born in the Rajapur District Banda (near Prayag), India to Atma Ram and Hulsi Dubey. Tulsidasji’s birth was considered to be very unusual. It is said that Tulsidasji was born after a 12-month pregnancy, and instead of crying, he uttered Lord Ram’s name. He was also born with 32 teeth and his physical structure was that of a 5-year-old boy. This type of birth was considered to be a bad omen, and as a result, mother Hulsi sent Tulsidasji with Chuniya (the nanny) to stay with his grandmother. After doing this, mother Hulsi died the very next day.

Chuniya, raised Tulsidasji with utmost affection, but she died when Tulsidasji was five years old. Tulsidasji became an orphan and started roaming aimlessly. With the inspiration from Lord Shiva, Shri Narharianand ji (a disciple of Shri Anantanand ji who used to live in Ramshail) found Tulsidasji and started calling him "Ram Bola". Shri Narharianand ji took Tulsidasji to Ayodhya and in Magha Shukla Panchmi in 1561 AD, the yagnopavit ceremony was performed. Tulsidasji started reciting Gayatri mantra on his own and everybody was astonished at his accomplishment. Shri Narharianand ji gave him the Ram mantra and thereafter, Tulsidas ji started his formal education in Ayodhya. Tulsidasji had superb wisdom, he was able to remember everything that was recited to him during the day by his guru, Shri Narharianandji. Both Shri Narharianand ji and Tulsidasji left for Sukar Kshetra. In Sukar Kshetra, Shri Narharianand ji narrated Ram Charit to Tulsidas ji. After a few days Tulsidas ji came to Kashi (now Varanasi, India) where he learned the Vedas from Shri Santanji for 15 years. Here in Kashi, he felt homesick and returned to his hometown after taking permission from his guru. After reaching home, he stared narrating the story of Lord Ram to the villagers.

In 1563 AD, Tulsidasji was married to a girl of the Bhardwaj Caste and started his happily married life. Once, when his wife went to visit her parents with her brother, Tulsidasji was unable to bare the separation, as a result, he arrived at his in-laws a few days later. His wife got upset and said to him that instead of wasting his energy on lust, he should put his energy in the service of God and receive blessings. Her words had a profound impact on Tulsidasji; he left at once for Prayag to become a sadhu.

He reached Kashi after doing pilgrimages of various holy places. He had darshan (sighting/appearance) of Kak Bhusund iji near Maansarovar. In Kashi, Tulsidas ji started reciting Ram Katha. Here, Tulsidasji came to know about the abode of Hanumanji by a spirit. During his meeting with Hanumanji, Tulsidasji expressed his desire to visually see Lord Ram. Hanumanji told Tulsidasji that he would receive darshan in Chitrakut. Upon hearing this, Tulsidasji left for Chitrakut. After reaching Chitrakut, Tulsidasji started living at Ramghat. One day he left for circumambulation (pardakshina), he saw two handsome princes going on horses with their bows and arrows, but he failed to recognize that it was Lord Ram and his brother Lakshman. Later, Hanumanji explained to Tulsidasji who the princes were; Tulsidasji regretted his mistake deeply. Hanumanji consoled him and told him to have patience and that Lord Ram will give him darshan again in the morning. On a Mauni Amavasya (dark night), in 1607 (1663 A.D.), Lord Ram gave his darshan to Tulsidasji. Lord Ram asked Tulsidasji to give him some chandan (sandalwood powder). Hanumanji thought that Tulsidasji may again miss this opportunity, so, he took the form of a parrot and said this couplet (doha): "Chitrakut ke ghat par Bhai Santan (saints) ki Bhir, Tulsidas Chandan Ghe-se, Tilak dait Raghubir." Lord Ram himself put chandan on Tulsidasji's forehead and himself and then disappeared.

At the command of Hanumanji, in 1628 (1684 A.D.) Tulsidasji left for Ayodhya. On the way he stayed in Prayag for a few days for Magh Mela. On the 6th day of the Magh Mela, Tulsidasji had darshan of Bhardwaj and Yagyavalkaji under the ‘vatt’ tree. From Prayag, Tulsidasji left for Kashi where he stayed at a Brahman’s house on Praladh Ghat. Here he acquired his poetic gift and he started writing shlokas in Sanskrit. Whatever Tulsidasji wrote during the day disappeared at night. This occurred every night until day eight, Lord Shiva appeared in Tulsidasji's dream and asked him to do a poetic composition in his own language. After this, Tulsidasji could not sleep, he got up and was blessed with the sighting of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. After Tulsidasji did pranaam to them, Lord Shiva told him to live in Ayodhya and write his poetic composition in Hindi. In 1631(1687 A.D.), on Ram Navmi (Lord Ram’s birth date), in the morning, Tulsidasji, started writing Shri Ram Charit Maanas. It took him 2 years, 7 months, and 26 days to finish this Holy Scripture. In 1633 (1689 A.D), on the day of Ram Vivah (Lord Ram’s wedding day), he completed all the seven kaands (chapters).

On the command of the Lord, Tulsidasji came to Kashi. Here, he recited Shri Ram Charit Maanas to Lord Vishwanath and mother Annapurna. At night, the book was placed inside Vishwanath Temple. In the morning when the door to the temple was opened, it was noticed that the words Satyam Shivam Sundaram followed by Lord Shiva’s signature were scribed on the Ram Charit Maanas. People who were present in the room heard a voice reciting the words Satyam Shivam Sundaram. When the local pundits heard this, the pundits got jealous. They tried to bad mouth Tulsidasji and tried to burn this book. The pundits sent two thieves to steal this book, upon arriving at Tulsidasji's house, the thieves saw two young fellows guarding Tulsidasji’s residence with bows and arrows. The thieves decided not to steal the book, and vowed never to steal again. Thinking that he was troubling the Lord to guard him, he gave away all the things in his house and kept the Ram Charit Maanas at his friend, Todar Mall's house. Later Tulsidasji wrote another copy of Shri Ram Charit Maanas. Based on this, many other editions of this book were written and Shri Ram Charit Maanas became very popular.

Tulsidasji started living on Aaseet Ghat, and with the inspiration of Hanumanji, Tulsidasji wrote Vinay Patrika. Pujya Pad Tulsidasji offered this book in the lotus feet of Lord Ram who signed this book himself. In 1680 (1736 A.D.) at Aaseet Ghat, Tulsidasji left his body for the heavenly abode reciting ‘Ram Ram’.
